Things to know

    • Gait - Any of the manners in which a horse moves, as a walk, trot, canter, gallop or rack.
    • Pace (or "Latteral gait") - 2 beat gait of a horse, in which the two feet on the same side are lifted and put down together (legs are in side pairs). You will hear only two hoof beats and the horse will sway slightly left to right. ( 1,2 )
    • Stepping Pace - This is an uneven 4 beat lateral gait. Watch the front and back legs on one side of the horse. The front foot will land slightly after the hind foot . You will hear four hoof beats, but each lateral pair will be very close together. The horse will have little to no sway. ( 1,2....3,4 )
    • Foxtrot - This is an uneven 4 beat diagonal gait. The right front will land slightly before the left hind, then the left front lands just before the right hind. You will hear four hoof beats, but each diagonal pair will be very close together. ( 1...2,3...4 )
    • Trot (or "Diagonal gait") - 2 beat gait of a horse, in which the front leg of one side is being lifted and put down together with the rear leg of the opposite side. You will hear only two hoof beats and the horse will move up and down instead of left to right. ( 1,2 )
    • Rack – 4 beat square gait. The front foot will land after the hind with equal timing between each foot-fall. You will hear four evenly timed hoof beats. The horse will have little to no sway.

    Termination:

    • Stallion – Intact male, 5 YO or older
    • Colt – Intact male, 5 YO or younger
    • Gelding – Neutered male of any age
    • Mare – Female 5 YO or older
    • Filly – Female 5 YO or younger
    • Foal – Either sex, from birth to weanling
    • Weanling – Either sex, weanling to 12 months old
    • Yearling – Either sex, 12 months to 23 months
